Politics have been dominated for the past decade by two brothers-in-law: John Compton, head of the UWP, and Julian Hunte, leader of the SLLP. The UWP favors the planned Windward Islands' federation. The SLLP opposes federation on the grounds that Compton will use it to retain power.
